Rocky Mountain is high country you can drive into: Trail Ridge Road climbs above 12,000 feet before it closes for the season with the snow, roughly late October to late May. Below it are alpine lakes, elk in the meadows at Bear Lake and Moraine Park, and trailheads that fill by sunrise in summer.
The park uses timed-entry reservations in the busy months, so check that alongside your campground. Moraine Park and Glacier Basin are the reservable base camps; the high trails come into their own in July once the passes clear.
Rocky Mountain National Park's 415 square miles (265,807 acres) encompasses a spectacular range of mountain environments. From meadows found in the montane life zone to glistening alpine lakes and up to the towering mountain peaks, there is something for everyone to discover. Along the way explore over 300 miles of hiking trails and incredible wildlife viewing.
